This year-end supplement analyses consumer price behaviour in terms of changes calculated from annual average index levels. Annual averages are obtained from the twelve monthly indexes of the calendar year, January to December. The annual percentage changes identified with the year 1984 were obtained by comparing the annual average index levels for 1984 with those of 1983. Changes calculated from annual averages, unlike those obtained from comparing the current month's index with that of the same month of the previous year are less influenced by irregular monthly changes. On the other hand, it should be noted that the annual average measure has the property of centering on events which are relatively distant and thus may not be relevant as indicators of more recent trends.
